Dreamscape

For Her by the Lake,
our City by the Water

*

 Civilizations pass away
as well as memories of written tongues.
Inscriptions may be interpreted.
That which passes through Speech is sure.

*

From two rocks on the ground,
The start is division and dream.
 Rose
In the water, growing out of Earth
Grows into Light, from out of the dark
at the bottom of the sea, and into Dawn
on the other side of Rose:
Violet

*

From the Networking Roots,
to the blossoming buds,
through the primary channel
of trunk, the spine,
the Tree is the Link
through Water and Fire
between Rock and the Sky.
 Tree by the Lake
 grows out of Rock,
 through Rain,
when water returns to water
after passing through Wind, our Breath.

*

River bleeds on the Earth,
Dewdrops into the ocean.
River, the Wind, follows
From destination to destination
Never beginning to end.

*

Speak through RoseViolet Dawn.
There is only the past and the future.
The bridge is present, vault of memory,
Maker of dream,
Dream come true
Before death into memory.

*

*

The difference
between looking at our horizon,
and looking slightly over our horizon,
is an infinitely large difference.

 *

Towards up and over horizon at Twice-a-Day-Dawn,
Live with the stars, the lightning, the Moon.
Live with meteor flashing through the Great Bear.
Live with the snail on the ground.
The path to the other side of the black universe
is through Rose and Violet holding together:
Body of  Water breathing Fire
and forming a new body.

 *

*

Circle of RoseViolet Dawn
Rings our planet with Her story
Follow the Heart of RoseViolet
Through the star which burns
Through the Circle of Dawn
to meet the emergence of Blue.

*

Fire of Sun
Burns our planet
With a blue flame
and Flesh is the Light.

*

 Fire-fly hovers
from bush to bush
near trees near the beach.

*

Waves fall away.
Sea is gathering in another place.
She is following the moon.
Half of a pearl lights our horizon.

*

Look at Earth
Through the four thousand eyes of a fly.
Look at one planet through seven billion skulls.

  *

Light is separated from darkness.
Blue is separated from Black.
Light of disc fire rises through Wind, our Breath.
Night is falling into Light.
Gray dome of mist between water and Blue
Filters the disc fire.

*

 Light passes through the veil
between the flame of Sun and the Rose of Earth.
Tomorrow has come
But there is no yesterday
For it is still today.
From light to light through Black,
Day has not ended.
She passed through a shadow.
Now face towards the Sun,
through the path of the Heart.
RoseViolet Circle around Earth
Is the Circle of Horizon
Our planet spins with-in.

*

Pass through division of time into day and night.
Emerge into Infinite night
and look from there to the Blue light
of Fire within the Heart.
Blue light shines within
as planet sphere is seen
Shining from without.
Blue sphere, watery jewel,
the Light before an eye:
around  Sun - Surya,
She takes a journey through seasons
which measures the angle of inclination
between the axis of her turning
and the plane of her ellipse around Sun.

*

The life of time on this Blue sphere
spinning through Light and Dark
Is One side all times living in darkness.
The Circle of RoseViolet Dawn is one dream,
as much as can be remembered
of what was seen when eyes looked
Into black empty space and found
Movement in Order.
The positions of stars are the notes
Of a musical score,
One cycle of which
goes through a movement
of twenty-six thousand years.

*

Earth is our droplet of blue light
Enveloped in black space,
and beneath the surface of sea,
Darkness grows with depth.
Most of Sea Life moves within
Light reaching into water
before the black envelope.
Life thrives within
the fabric thin membrane of Light
Enclosing this big wet rock.

*

Turbulence prevails
Within the shell of atmosphere.
Life emerges out of water
Living both under it and over it
near the surface of interaction.

*

There are two sides to the Lake,
Under the mirror of water,
and in the reflection.

  *

Tomorrow's atmosphere,
comes from Our chipping the Rock.
As we Look inside the rock
and Look through the sky
to the inside of outer space,
In either direction is found
a new surface and a new enclosure.
The mind of our planet
Sees as far inside
As We see outside.
Depths of perception
In each direction
Move in tandem.

*

*

The choice of a point in time
For beginning a new time
Is one time left
and another time entered.
The choice of a point in one time
For beginning of a new one
Is end of time one
And beginning of time two.
Point.
Aqua
is
Water on the Beach.

*

*

That was once . . . upon a time . . . long, long ago . . .
When, no one knows, because that was before time.
We look through Luna now, the reflecting pool.
The mirror of Sun – Surya.
The seasons travel one through another.
Having memories of seasons,
Memories of color,
Memories of sound,
Now is the present,
creating memory
for tomorrow,
The past and the future speaking. . .
Together at the same time

*

Breathe deeply. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . the New air.
The atmosphere on planet Blue
has recently undergone various changes.
It is expected that the change in atmosphere
Will affect the Life forms of our planet
in various ways.
No one knows what will happen.
We who Live
Now envision our Thought
for tomorrow.
Listen with one another,
and speak Truth to our Life on Blue.
Each may see a new Light emerging through Blue,
the beginning of Violet.
Raindrops fall from the sky from the past
Into Earth now
to dissolve into Her
and grow out of Her,
Her next phase.

·

Lady RoseViolet Dawn
Laughs at Moon and blues the Sky
and chases stars into light years away.
Today is a Circle of RoseViolet Dawn.
Churning gray Ocean waits for this Lady
to sprinkle her leaps to the sky with diamonds.
Earth bathes Her body in color and light,
and pictures in the sky make dreams out of stars.
We reach our  magic in togetherness
when stars and sun meet through RoseViolet Dawn
on either side of Today.
Voice within each of I leads We now.
Take care of Her and keep Her nearby,
For Our answer is each of I know Her.
She is the Heart of Peace in Speech.

*

The Earth of continental shelves and oceanic valleys
Is a cup now two thirds filled with water.
This body container of water
Passes now through a time of transformation.
Earth is a two petaled flower
With a petal of sky and a petal of fire.
SkyWater absorbs the fire
and the color of SkyPetal
May be somewhat different
from the Blue that it now is.
As SkyPetal changes color
through seasons of atmosphere,
Each of I is dew drop-let
and nectar blood of this planet.

*

Wind of Earth spinning carries clouds full of moisture
through our Circle of RoseViolet Dawn.
From the shoreline,
Look over the rim of the Lake, Heart's cup.
From the shoreline of the continental shelves,
Enclosing the pool filled with dewdrops
warmed by the volcanic core,
Look through Dawn over our Horizon.
Our veil of Ultra-Violet Lace is thin,
and if torn, not to be mended.
The scar to our Mother and our Self
Will be in the nucleus of our cell.
Within the bonds of division and dream,
The variations will be free to love.

*

  We have seen Blue
for the First time from the Outside.
Now
We Listen in Order,
and speak of the steppingstones
between
our Myth of Origin
and the story
of the Star in our Heart.

*

Our City grows from our Story.
Time is measured in color.
There are three.
Black.
RoseViolet.
Blue.

Our City is a picture drawn ten thousand years ago.
The picture in sand waits for this evening's tide.
Time is the curl and wash. Sandgrains shuffle.
Sun's ray glints off the surface of Luna,
phasing as she journeys
across the surface of our Sky.

The castle is sand,
and rises and falls
as Rain speaks.

 *

Watch water from the mouth of the cave
and paint a picture on the wall.
There is a Sea of water and a Sea of sand.
The Desert of sand is above Sea level.
Two continental deserts
turn through RoseViolet Dawn
on planet Blue.
TERRA, Daughter of Gaia and mother of all rivers,
Names the great Desert which homes three Oases:
Africa . . . . . . . . . . . . . South of our Sahara,
Europa . . . . . .  North of our Mediterranean,
Asia. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  East of our Aegean.
our Ocean, our Sea  surrounds
the continental desert TERRA,
and across the Sea from TERRA
are the Twin Turtles of continental desert OLLIN,
from the Aztec word for Movement.
The Western side of OLLIN
is mountain-chain from North to South.
The Eastern side embraces the Twin river valleys,
Amazon and Mississippi,
the Carribean Island Chain,
and the Isthmus of Yucatan.
OLLIN is an Oasis
in the Sea surrounding TERRA.

*

By candlelight in the village,
after Rain,
Puddles are sprinkled with mist,
Which follows the deluge.
Half a moon's light
dances through rings and bubbles,
a mosaic of hexagons with wavicle sides.
Storm is rolling quietly now.
Soon oasis shakes the water from Her back
Into the Light of Dawn.
The  largest village in each Oasis,
is our City by the Water.
Where is each Oasis going?
One oasis is going through Cuneiform.
Another oasis is going through Newsprint.
The Neolithic metallurgical society
has chipped the rock and found the atom.
Our Village is a steppingstone
from City to City
through time on Blue.

*

Speak with one Voice.
The Ocean and the Desert
entwine We who Listen,
the cells of our Sphere who we are
Dressed in Black, Brown, Red,
Yellow, and White.
Having crossed oceans and deserts
and met in many places,
the Path of Our meeting
Shall continue to be
through Speech with True Voice.
Across the Sea of Darkness to the New Day,
through quiet gray,
through light to dawn,
Time is a memory,
The infinite imagination,
the dream,
And the dream returns to the Source.

Heart of the Stone

The framework of the structure begins with the twin rectangles
at the Heart of the Aztec Calendar Stone.

The  tapestry of the mythological symbols
are rooted in and grow from the geometry
of the intersecting rectangles at the center.

The symbol is the message.
The book of drawings and writings is the vehicle.

I did not plan to come up with this “Outline for a New Mythology”
when I began my series of drawings when I was thirty-three in nineteen seventy-seven.
I was simply an ex Peace Corps volunteer who had served in India,
who then studied Cultural Anthropology, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Shamanism,
mythology, symbology, and linguistics,
and who then turned to the art of painting pictures
and writing short stories and poetry.

I had been painting since the fall of ’73, and was continuing my studies
through university libraries, without the framework of a formal program,
for my interests in my chosen fields of study never waned.
I was mystified by the quadrilateral geometric structure
at the Heart of the Aztec calendar stone,
embedded as is in mythological symbols.
Nowhere in my reading did I find mention of why the design is this way.

The series of drawings emerged spontaneously, one after another.
I began geometrically deconstructing the design.
There is  simplicity, perfection, and gracefulness
in the geometric figure of these intersecting rectangles.

Here is the universal symbol of the quadrilateral,
the four directions, the four quarters of the Earth,
the four seasons between the Solstices and Equinoxes,
all things that come to our minds in fours,
presented in a way that has not been seen
since the time when the makers of the calendar stone
set their chisels to the rock.
I continued with my series of drawings until I had completed my visual poem,
and published them together in a book,
placing the keystone symbol of the intersecting rectangles on the cover.
The title: The Gathering of the Tribes of the Earth,
was intended to convey the universal significance of this symbol
and the drawings which precede and follow it in the series.
This is three years before I wrote any poetry about this sequence of drawings.

Tso-odzil

 Turquoise Mountain
Gather and set the circle of rocks
Gather and pile the wood to be burned.
Strike the match in mid afternoon,
when sun is bright and sky crystal blue.
Burn it all down to when stars come out,
and evening star Venus
slides behind juniper groves.
There are no stars in the sky of the city.
Here is what I came to see.

Beneath the summit of snow capped Mount Turquoise.
Watch a wispy cloud turn pink in the fading light of sunset.
Feel the chill begin to seep through old shirtsleeves.
Watch stars emerge from the darkness above,
until the sky is bursting with points of light,
like a shattered pomegranate.
Look for the pictures in the stars I know.
Watch the turning of the wheel of Time.
The final log is burned in half
by the blade of the flame nurtured with small sticks.
The log separates in a snap.
The final embers glow.
The flame has spoken with the stars.

Fragments of dreams at the end of a story
leave me wondering about all that went before.
Perhaps the final understanding is all that matters,
and how I got here, is irrelevant.

At the top of the mountain with fire and stars,
everyone whom I have known is here.
Around the fire, between daylight and starlight,
thought disappears, memories disappear,
the inside of my house
with its reminders of who I have been,
all of that is disappeared, in the circle of Earth around the fire,
in the juniper grove on the side of Mount Turquoise, under our sky.

Feeding the fire, stick by stick, becomes the order of the day,
deciding when to burn high,  when to burn low,
deciding when to throw on a log and how to place it
in the deepening bed of coals,
making plans for the big log,
and how to burn it through.

Our Sun arches low to the silver horizon.
Follow the lengthening shadows of pinion pines.
Catch first sight of evening star Venus
as she shines brighter than a sapphire in the darkening sky.
Fireball of a meteor with tail of a dragon
falls towards the western horizon
amidst the ocean of stars.
Here I can take the time to have my private conversation
with you, my friend, my brother, my sister.

These words we share through the dancing flames,
under the shattered pomegranate of stars above,
reach their conclusion with the final snap
between the two ends of the great log.
There are no more sticks to burn,
The embers glow red in the darkness around,
the circle of stones,
the circle of trees,
the circle of our horizon,
the circle of stories,
our dreams in the stars.
